In 3rd grade, the students continue to strengthen their academic foundation while being guided toward becoming independent learners. In Religion, the students are encouraged to spread the Good News in order to continue Jesus' mission on Earth. Their understanding is deepened as they are helped to experience the Church as a Christian community. In Language Arts, the students steadily fortify their communication skills with an integrated approach. The students develop as independent, strategic readers while understanding the need for proper writing, grammar and spelling. In Social Studies, the students investigate different kinds of communities. They gain information about how people live and how that differs from their own community. They locate where each community is and how that location affects the way of life. They identify how each community provides for the needs and wants of its members. The students gain an understanding of the importance of government. In Mathematics, the students build upon their acquired skills. They add, subtract, multiply and divide with greater numbers. They use metric and customary units of measurement, as well as tell time to the minute. They explore patterns, place, value, geometry, fractions and decimals. They construct and interpret graphs and explore probability. In Science, the students observe seasonal changes, explore the relationship of air, water and land on Earth, view changes in the states of matter, identify forms of energy and how one form is transformed into another, and learn about the effects of common forces and how they operate across distances. Third graders identify characteristics of living things as well as the life processes common to all. They recognize traits of living things and understand the genetic continuity between generations. They observe how certain characteristics help each species to survive in its natural environment. This is an exciting year in which great strides are made by all !
